Cloud-Based Phone Software Start-Up Twilio Taps Fo

There’s a certain kind of geek who gets excited about Twilio. Who among software developers wouldn’t jump at the chance of adding voice-calling and text-messaging options to a public-facing application? Companies like eBay unit StubHub, Salesforce.com and Airbnb have used it to create some custom apps that include the use of a phone.

This creates curious opportunities for fun. When Twilio was in the process of raising its most recent funding round — a $17 million series C led by Bessemer Venture Partners and Union Square Ventures — Bessemer partner Byron Deeter created a Twilio-connected number and asked CEO Jeff Lawson to call it. As recounted by VentureBeat, when Lawson called, he heard automated voice messages asking him to press 1 for $5 million, 2 for $10 million and 3 for $15 million.

Hijinks like this say a lot about the culture that surrounds Twilio, but it’s not well known outside the developer community. Addressing that will be job one for Lynda Smith, its new chief marketing officer, who joined the company on April 23.

Smith is joining Twilio from Jive, the social enterprise software concern, where she was senior vice president of marketing until last fall. As CMO, she’ll be responsible for Twilio’s marketing strategy around the world.

“I think the Twilio brand is huge among developers because it gives that community a chance to play with something they haven’t had before,” Smith told me. “But it’s also getting a lot of traction within the telephony industry. … Voice and messaging are still a big part of the worlds that we live in Where to buy windows 7 key, but they’ve been difficult to bring into new-world software applications because it’s still tied to some old-world things like hardware and protocols.” First priority, she says, is making sure that people outside the developer world know what Twilio is and what they can do with it.

Before Jive Cheap windows 7 key, Smith held a number executive slots at Genpact, Nuance, Genesys and Lockheed Martin. She’s a graduate of Simpson College, and has an MBA from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton Business School. She’s also on the faculty at Stanford University, where she lectures on global entrepreneurial marketing.

Twilio is definitely on the move: It landed $17 million in that C round late last year Windows XP Key, bringing its total capital raised to about $34 million. It also just announced its second conference in San Francisco, in October. Time to get serious about marketing.

Colorado governor seeks legislative session on civ

DENVER (Reuters) – Colorado’s Democratic governor called on Thursday for a special legislative session to consider a civil unions bill that would grant legal rights to same-sex couples, setting up a potential showdown with Republican lawmakers.

Governor John Hickenlooper said in an executive order calling for the session replica watches, due on Monday, that the bill was needed so couples, regardless of their sexual orientation, could “take care of each other and their families.”

Hickenlooper has previously told reporters that without the bill, which failed to advance to a vote in the state House of Representatives during the regular session, the state was depriving people of their civil rights.

The governor’s action came a day after President Barack Obama became the first sitting president to say that he thinks same-sex marriage should be legal, in a move hailed by Democrats and gay rights groups as a benchmark for civil rights.

Others, including Republican activists and conservative Christian leaders, criticized him for taking up a divisive issue they see as an affront to traditional values.

Nine states already allow civil unions or domestic partnerships for gays and lesbians replica watches, while another eight plus the District of Columbia have gone further and allow gay marriage or are awaiting enactment of laws legalizing gay nuptials.

If Colorado’s measure becomes law, the state would become only the second in the largely conservative, libertarian-minded Rocky Mountain region to endorse same-sex civil unions or domestic partnerships after Nevada did so in 2009.

The state’s Republican-controlled House of Representatives had failed to take a vote on the civil unions bill before the regular session ended on Wednesday, drawing condemnation from gay rights groups. A vote had been expected to be close.

Colorado House Speaker Frank McNulty, a Republican, has expressed his opposition to the civil unions bill. Under state law, it remains up to lawmakers whether to consider any bill the governor requests them to take up.

Aside from civil unions, Hickenlooper asked lawmakers to address six other subjects, which ranged from funding for the Colorado water conservation board to penalties for driving under the influence of marijuana.

Colorado voters in 2006 passed a constitutional amendment restricting marriage to between a man and a woman.

“We’re opposed to civil unions because legally they are used as a stepping stone to same-sex marriage,” said Carrie Gordon Earll replica watches, a spokeswoman for the policy arm of Colorado-based Christian group Focus on the Family.

“We are, in opposing civil unions, defending the vote of the people,” she said.

Christie No More VP Questions

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is letting everyone know he’s tired of getting questions about whether he’ll be on Mitt Romney’s ticket this Fall.

One of the reasons Christie is so widely known for both his tell-it-like-it-is style and humor is because of the YouTube videos his office has adopted as part of its messaging since he became governor in 2009. Today Cheap Tattoo Machines, his office is out with another.

In a new web video posted by his office, which ABC News obtained from Christie’s office but which was first reported by Buzzfeed The Best Tattoo Inks, two of Christie’s aides — including Communications Director Maria Comella — are conspiring about ways to get his message out, deciding on more town halls.

Christie eavesdrops on their conversation and says to the camera The Best Tattoo Kits, “More town halls? Are those guy kidding me?  Easy for them to say. They never even show up at the town halls.”

“I can’t take one more question about flooding,” Christie said in the video. “I don’t want any more questions about being vice president.  And these kids, these kids with all these questions.  I can’t take it anymore.  So no, they’re going to have to come up with something other than townhalls.  They have got to come up with some better ideas than that.  I could maybe come up with something even bigger than that.  I’ll come up with something.”

Christie is then seen walking out of the governor’s office and grabbing a fire extinguisher as the video ends and promises more to come.  The New Jersey governor holds the town halls about once a week and for those that attend them they will find a large amount of questions about flooding, students posing queries and the occasional vice presidential questions from the crowd.

It’s clear the video is supposed to be funny, as Comella almost always attends his town halls and Christie seems to relish the back-and-forth with fans and foes  alike.  But it’s just a preview. His office wouldn’t reveal more about the next video, which is expected to post at 9 pm Tuesday evening.

Christie’s blunt style led him most recently to tell a group of students that Mitt Romney might be able to “convince” him to be his running mate, even though he has often said his doesn’t want the number two position.

Obama vs. Clinton onUniversality

Sens. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama

Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton are slugging it out over their respective health-care plans. It’s a fairly pointless argument to begin with, because they both have pretty good proposals on the table. (Click here for my earlier discussion of Obama’s plan Buy Chloe Dresses, and here for my earlier discussion of Hillary’s.) Paul Krugman of the New York Times has weighed in on Hillary’s side of the dispute, and so, less emphatically, has John Nichols of TheNation. But to the very limited extent that this debate is worth following at all, it’s Obama who has the better argument.

At issue is how “universal” we can expect any health-care reform to be. Obama’s plan creates various mechanisms to make both private and public health insurance more readily available. Hillary’s plan does the same, but also creates an “individual mandate” requiring every American to buy health insurance. Obama’s plan creates an “individual mandate” too, but only for children. Otherwise, under Obamacare, citizens would remain free to buy private health insurance or not as they pleased.

Clinton is attacking Obama for running an ad in which he says his health plan will “cover everyone.” No it won’t, says Clinton campaign manager Patty Solis Doyle. “Until the time comes when Sen. Obama has a plan that will cover everyone, [he] should stop running this false advertisement.” The campaign is gathering lettersfrom health-care professionals across Iowa urging Obama to “support universal health care.”

Obama replies that Hillary’s individual mandate is a bluff. “Without an enforcement mechanism,” Obama says, “there is no mandate. It’s just a political talking point.” He’s right. Clinton has outlined no such enforcement mechanism (and neither has Obama for his own Replica Emilio Pucci Dresses, more limited mandate). John Edwards White Herve leger sale, whose plan also includes an “individual mandate,” recently secondedClinton’s criticism of Obama and Obama’s criticism of Clinton. Edwards has outlined how he would compel Americans to buy health insurance. He

will require proof of insurance when income taxes are paid and when health care is provided. Families without insurance will be enrolled in Medicare, Medicaid, S-Chip or another targeted plan or be assigned a plan within new Health Care Markets. [These are regional markets Edwards would create in which private insurers would be invited to compete with public health care plans.]

Families who lose coverage will be expected to enroll in another plan or be assigned one. For the few people who refuse to pay Cheap DKNY Clothes, the government will help collect back premiums with interest and collection costs by using tools like the ones it uses for student loans and taxes, including collection agencies and wage garnishment.

Krugman says this is a fine calling of Obama’s bluff and

a terrific idea — not only would it prevent people from gaming the system, it would have the side benefit of enrolling people who qualify for S-Chip and other government programs Cheap Hale Bob Dresses, but don’t know it.

I have my doubts. Enrolling people in a private health care plan isn’t the hard part; forcing people to pay for a private health care plan is the hard part. Yes, the government has procedures to collect student loans and unpaid taxes Herve Leger v neck sale, but it’s understood that such payments are obligations. There’s little disagreement that if you take out a loan, you’re obliged to repay it, and only slightly more disagreement (mostly among crackpots) that as a citizen you are obliged to share in the cost of government. I believe there would be a lot of disagreement about whether the government could compel you to buy a private health insurance policy.

If you want to drive a car, it’s accepted that you have to buy private auto insurance. But that’s conditional on enjoying the societal privilege of driving a car; you can avoid the requirement by choosing not to drive one. A mandate to buy private health insurance, however, would be conditional on … being alive. I can’t think of another instance in which the government says outright, “You must buy this or that,” independent of any special privilege or subsidy it may bestow on you. Even if such a requirement could pass muster in the courts—and I have my doubts—it seems to me that politically it would give the inevitable conservative opposition a nice fat target to rally around. Big Brother will steal your wages if you don’t buy a health insurance policy! Harry and Louisehad a lot less to work with.

Political salability is the only reason for Democratic candidates to bend themselves into pretzels to maintain a meaningful role for private health insurers in the first place. It wouldn’t make much sense to sacrifice that salability by forcing voters to participate in the private health insurance market more than they wish to.
